Multiple Kanazawa trips have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Kanazawa accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Kanazawa
Kanazawa Station
Kanazawa Station is the city’s main transport hub and one of the easiest places to stay for first-time visitors. A lot of visitors only stay in this small city for a night or two, so basing yourself close to the station makes sense.
Besides, the area is modern, lively, and very walkable, so it’s a really fun place to stay! In fact, you can walk to most of Kanazawa’s main attractions from here, so what more could you ask for? Kanazawa Castle and the famous Kenrokuen Garden are just 15-20 minutes away on foot, or you can hop on the convenient loop bus that stops at the city’s top attractions.
But it’s not just a great base – the area itself is pleasant and walkable, with lots of shops, cafes, and restaurants to check out. The station itself is definitely worth a look, too, with its striking Tsuzumi-mon Gate and futuristic architecture. It’s a very Insta-worthy first stop in the city.
The presence of the train station also makes it simple to plan day trips to nearby towns or attractions outside the city. In short, we highly recommend this area, especially for your first visit to Kanazawa because it’s super central, practical, and it gives a feel for the city’s energy without being overwhelming.

Korinbo/Nagamachi

We absolutely loved visiting restored samurai residences and small museums here because it felt like stepping back in time into old Japan. You can also get to Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle in about 20 minutes using public transport.
Even though Korinbo can feel busy, especially around the shopping arcades, it’s a convenient hub with buses and taxis readily available. In the evenings, the streets light up with local eateries and cozy bars, so it’s easy to enjoy Kanazawa’s nightlife without venturing far.

Katamachi
Katamachi is Kanazawa’s nightlife hub, so it’s the clear choice for partygoers! Granted, a lot of travelers come to Kanazawa for its cultural attractions, so if that’s the case for you we’d recommend staying somewhere more central. However, if you’re all about Japanese nightlife and want to experience the city after dark, then this area can be a lot of fun. The neighborhood is buzzing well into the evening (and beyond) with everything from casual pubs to stylish cocktail lounges within walking distance.
During the day, Katamachi has a more local vibe compared to the more tourist-heavy areas, and you’ll find small shops, cafes, and plenty of places to grab a bite.
This neighborhood is a little further from Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen Garden, and Omicho Market – about a 20-minute walk or a short bus ride – so it’s not quite as convenient for sightseeing.
That said, the slightly off-center location often means better hotel prices! We stayed here on one of our visits, and while it was perfectly fine, we’d suggest Katamachi more for repeat visitors or travelers who prioritize food, nightlife, and value over proximity to the main tourist sights.

Korinkyo – $$$

We love the fact that there’s a rooftop spa and sauna, because you couldn’t ask for a better way to relax after a day of sightseeing – or a night out at the area’s many izakayas! Speaking of which, the location in Katamachi makes it easy to dive into the city’s nightlife, with dozens of great spots nearby. While it’s a little further from Kanazawa’s top attractions, the unique design and luxurious atmosphere make this hotel worth the splurge if you want something special.

HOTEL AMANEK Kanazawa is a stylish option in the lively Katamachi area and we think it offers excellent value for money.
