Things to do in Okinawa, Japan

1. Explore the Kerama Islands

The Kerama Islands are home to some of the clearest water we have ever snorkeled in, and certainly the clearest water in Japan! So of course, we had to book a snorkeling tour, and this one proved to be absolutely amazing.

We were picked up just before 8 am, and within an hour, we were surrounded by the famous “Kerama Blue.” The color of the water shifts from turquoise to deep sapphire as you cruise around, and it’s just as mesmerizing from the boat as it is once you dive in!

Our guides were professional, friendly, and really knowledgeable about the islands’ marine life. They made sure even first-timers felt safe and confident in the water. 

Over the course of the day, we stopped at three different snorkeling spots near Tokashiki, Zamami, and Aka Islands. Each one offered something different, from towering coral gardens to schools of tropical fish, and at one point, a graceful sea turtle swam right past us! It was so exciting.

The whole day was so smooth, and everything we needed was provided for us, from lunch and drinks to wetsuits and towels. Our guides also snapped plenty of photos for us, so we had memories to take home without needing to worry about a waterproof camera.

All in all, this tour is an absolute must-do in Okinawa, because the Kerama Islands’ marine life is too good to pass up!

2. Snorkel in Ishigaki Island’s famous Blue Cave

The Blue Cave on Ishigaki Island is exactly as magical as it sounds, which is why this snorkeling tour was our favorite experience in Okinawa! The clear, shimmering waters took our breath away, and we had the best time exploring limestone caves, natural rock formations, and snorkeling with tropical fish. 

We started the day by exploring the limestone cave itself, and then when we got in the water to snorkel, we were just amazed by the clarity. Seriously, the visibility here is next level. 

Our guide, Akari, was super patient as he guided us through the trench. As we swam, we saw coral gardens, tropical fish, and even a turtle. He even used a defogging solution for our masks to make sure we enjoyed maximum visibility at all times. As snorkeling experiences go, this one was pretty epic! 

What’s great about this tour is that it’s very beginner-friendly and you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to participate. There were plenty of novices in our group, and Akari looked after them all very well.

By the end of the tour, I felt like I had truly experienced the underwater magic of Ishigaki. This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime adventures you’ll never forget, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat! No wonder it has HUNDREDS of five-star reviews!

3. See the local side of Naha on a sunset bicycle ride

This cycling tour of Naha is one of the most fun and immersive ways to explore! And best of all, you get to watch the sunset from a gorgeous vantage point over the city. I really think it’s such a great way to spend an afternoon here!

When we did this tour, we met our guide near Makishi Monorail Station and got a quick safety briefing before setting off. Right away, we were off the main streets and into the quieter backstreets, passing through neighborhoods that still have traditional Okinawan houses and feeling the everyday rhythm of local life. I loved it! 

One of our first stops was Tsuboya Yachimun Dori, the historic pottery district. It was so fascinating to learn about the Ryukyu Kingdom’s pottery traditions and see actual artisans hard at work! From there, we cycled through Mihara and Shurikinjocho, where the cobblestone streets and shrines made us feel as though we had gone back in time. 

However, the highlight of the tour was definitely Shurisakiyamacho, a viewpoint overlooking Naha City. The e-bike made the climb easy, so we weren’t exhausted by the time we got to the top, and seeing the city bathed in golden light felt like a dream! 

By the time we returned to our starting point, the city lights were twinkling, and we felt like we had truly experienced Naha. It was the perfect mix of exercise, sightseeing, and cultural immersion, and I would absolutely do it again!

4. Canoe or SUP through Iriomote’s mangroves 

Spending a day on this SUP tour of Iriomote Island was one of the most unique and relaxing experiences of our Okinawa trip. We had so much fun exploring the mangrove forests, and we even got to choose between a paddleboard and a canoe, although we personally opted for the former.

Gliding through the mangrove channels was so much fun. Nothing beats being surrounded by lush greenery and the quiet sounds of nature! The water was perfectly sheltered from the wind, so even complete beginners could feel confident. Our guide was super attentive, taking photos with a waterproof camera so we could capture every moment without worrying about getting our devices wet.

After a morning paddle, we headed to Yubu Island for lunch. We got to ride across the water on a traditional water buffalo cart, which was such a fun experience – the driver even played traditional music as we crossed! The island itself is small but beautiful, and we had time to explore, enjoy a snack, and take in the scenery.

The afternoon included a second paddle session, giving us a chance to really immerse ourselves in the mangrove forest. By the time we returned to the port, we felt completely refreshed and connected to nature. This tour perfectly balances adventure, relaxation, and cultural experiences, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Iriomote.

5. Snorkel with sea turtles around Miyako Island

Snorkeling around Miyako Island on this half-day tour was one of the most magical experiences of our Okinawa trip! The waters were crystal clear, and we saw vibrant coral reefs, clownfish, and sea turtles, so we couldn’t really have asked for more.

As soon as we got into the water, we were mesmerized by the sheer number of tropical fish that were swirling around us. The water was so clear that we were able to see everything in stunning detail, and the water was super calm and easy to navigate. This would be a great first experience for beginners!

Seeing sea turtles was simply amazing, and our guide, Yuto, ensured that everyone stayed a safe distance away so that we could admire these graceful creatures without disturbing them. Yuto also snapped tons of photos with his waterproof camera, so we now have photographic evidence of all of these magical moments! 

This tour was short enough to feel easy and relaxing, but immersive enough to leave a lasting impression. If you’re visiting Miyako Island, this snorkeling adventure is an absolute must, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced swimmer. 6. Discover Naha on a private walking tour 

Spending a full day exploring Naha with a private licensed guide is the ultimate way to explore the city! If you’re super into culture and want to get a local’s perspective on Naha and its quirks and traditions, then this 6-hour walking tour is a must. 

Our guide, Hide, delivered a really personalized and immersive experience. Unlike standard tours, this one let us choose from nearly 20 sites, so we could tailor the day to our interests and pace. You can tick off the main highlights, focus on local hidden gems, or opt for a mix of both!

We started at Shurijo Castle, taking in its history and stunning architecture, then wandered through the bustling Kokusaidori Street. We stopped at Makishi Public Market to sample local delicacies, which was a real highlight for me, while Hide filled us in about Okinawa’s past and culture. The context he gave made each stop feel so much more meaningful.

We also visited the serene Fukushen Garden, explored the spiritual Sefa Utaki, and even saw the Nakagusuku Castle ruins. We wouldn’t have come across some of these places on our own, so it really was worth exploring with a private guide!

By the end of the tour, we felt like we had truly experienced Naha beyond the typical tourist spots. The combination of history, culture, and personal attention made it both educational and incredibly memorable. 7. Explore Northern Okinawa on a kayak 

We’re pretty active travelers, so there was no way we could pass up this northern Okinawa kayak tour! There are a few different options available: a kayak-only tour, a kayak tour and jungle trek, or a golden hour sunrise kayak. All three are pretty epic, but we went for the kayak and trek option. 

The private nature of the tour immediately set it apart because we could go at our own pace and focus on the areas that most interested us. We loved paddling through the mangroves and along the coastline, and the fact that it was just us and our guide, Nik, made it even more special. It was so peaceful, and I had to pinch myself as we glided through this hidden paradise.

Nik was an amazing guide. He helped us spot wildlife and snapped lots of photos along the way. Meanwhile, the kayaks themselves were very easy to maneuver thanks to the foot-controlled rudder. This would be a great kayak experience for beginners! 

We loved the jungle trek portion of the tour, and the fact that we got to take a break on a secluded beach with plenty of tea and snacks! On the return journey, we explored different routes past small uninhabited islands and more mangrove-lined rivers. By the end of the tour, we felt completely relaxed and in awe of Okinawa’s natural beauty—I’m really not surprised it has so many five-star reviews.

8. Snorkel through Miyako’s Pumpkin Limestone Caves 

This full-day tour on Miyako Island is an epic adventure. We loved it because it combined snorkeling with sea turtles and exploring the Pumpkin Limestone Cave. As the name suggests, this cave is known for its uniquely shaped stalactites and stalagmites, which resemble winter vegetables!

We started the morning meeting our guide at the activity field. After a quick briefing, we headed straight into the emerald-blue waters for snorkeling. The visibility was incredible, and swimming alongside vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish was mesmerizing. The real treat, of course, was spotting several sea turtles gracefully gliding through the water. Our guide made sure everyone felt safe and confident, even those with little snorkeling experience, and captured some fantastic photos of us that we received afterward.

After snorkeling, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch before heading to the canoe launch for our journey to Pumpkin Limestone Cave. We enjoyed an easy paddle through the waterways out to the cave, where we had so much fun exploring the fascinating pumpkin-shaped limestone formations. Navigating through tight passages and climbing over rocks was exhilarating, and there was even a jumping spot at the end, which added a fun, adventurous element!

This tour does an amazing job of showcasing the best of Miyako Island. From its underwater wonders to its hidden caves, we got to see it all—no wonder it has such great reviews.

9. Take an introductory dive in the Blue Cave

What I love about this introductory diving tour is how beginner-friendly it is. It’s perfect for people who don’t have a PADI certification and aren’t quite ready to invest hundreds of dollars into a full diving course. It’s a relaxed, safe way to experience the magic of scuba without the commitment.

The dive shop was spotless and welcoming, and since it’s only a minute from the port, everything felt seamless. We hopped on a short boat ride and within minutes were at the entrance to the Blue Cave. There was no need to lug heavy gear or swim a long way – we just went straight to the fun part! 

Our guide was fantastic, keeping everything at our pace and making sure we felt completely comfortable before heading underwater. Once we were inside the cave, the blue light was surreal. It really seemed as though the water was glowing all around us!

We saw schools of colorful tropical fish, coral formations, and even got to feed the fish while our guide captured amazing photos and videos. It’s such a unique memory to bring home, especially since everything is shared right to your phone afterward.

We also loved that there was one guide for two people on this tour, which means participants have full support the entire time. If you’ve ever been curious about diving but hesitant to take the plunge into a full certification course, this experience is the perfect introduction!

10. Visit Okinawa’s greater sights on a bus tour – Churaumi Aquarium, Kori Island, Cape Manzamo, & more 

This full-day Okinawa bus tour was the perfect way to cover some of the island’s most iconic sights without the stress of driving. We think it’s the perfect choice if you’re short on time here and don’t want to miss any highlights! 

When we did this tour, we started early in Naha and headed straight to Nago Pineapple Park. Admission was included, so we hopped on a pineapple-shaped cart and had a blast riding through tropical gardens and even a dinosaur-themed section! It was quirky and fun, and of course, we sampled plenty of pineapple treats before getting back on the bus. 

Next, we crossed over the super long bridge to Kouri Island—it’s almost 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long and provides amazing ocean views! The island is breathtaking, with white sand and bright blue water, so it’s definitely worth checking out. We enjoyed a stroll along the beach and went to a local market before continuing on to the Churaumi Aquarium

At the aquarium, we had over two hours to explore, so we saw giant whale sharks and manta rays, and even stopped by the turtle pool and manatee area. Later, we visited Okashigoten to see how Okinawa’s famous beniimo tarts are made, and then ended the day by gazing at the dramatic cliffs at Cape Manzamo.

As I’m sure you can tell, this was a jam-packed day, but it was paced really well, so we never felt rushed. It’s the ultimate way to see Okinawa’s must-visit spots in just one day!
